*Final dimensions, pattern symmetry, and edge finishes are determined by the rug's original weave density and structural foundation. Every custom cutting project is meticulously templated and assessed to ensure structural integrity before any alterations begin.

The Engineering of a Custom Cut

The Danger of Fraying: Cutting a rug is not as simple as taking shears to fabric. Whether a rug is hand-knotted, hand-tufted, or machine-woven, severing the foundation immediately compromises its structural tension. Without immediate and expert stabilization, the rug will rapidly unravel and lose its pile.

Millimeter Precision: We utilize advanced templating and physical layouts to cut your rug to the exact dimensions of your space. Whether you need a simple size reduction, a custom hall runner, or a perfectly measured stair runner, our cuts are mathematically precise to achieve a clean, accurate fit within the room.

Bespoke Edge Finishing: A custom-cut rug must be properly finished to look intentional and high-end. We offer an extensive selection of edge treatments, including color-matched hand-serging, narrow cotton binding, and premium wide leather borders, ensuring your new piece elevates your interior design.

Questions?

Can broadloom carpet be cut and bound into an area rug?

Absolutely. We regularly take high-end broadloom carpet and cut it to the exact dimensions of a client's room, finishing the edges with custom cotton binding, serging, or leather borders to create a bespoke, perfectly sized area rug.

What is the difference between serging and binding?

Serging is a continuous yarn that is tightly whipped around the edge of the rug, giving it a classic, hand-finished look common on Persian and fine wool rugs. Binding uses a strip of fabric (like cotton, linen, or leather) folded over the edge and sewn down, offering a clean, tailored, and modern border.

Will cutting my patterned rug ruin the symmetry?

We mathematically template every cut before making it. While reducing a rug's size means some of the pattern or outer border will be lost, our master artisans strategically plan the cuts to preserve the central medallion and maintain the best possible visual symmetry for the new dimensions.

How long does custom cutting and binding take?

Standard resizing and edge binding typically take 2 to 3 weeks in our workroom. Projects requiring highly complex architectural cuts, custom-sourced leather borders, or intricate stair runner fabrication may require additional time.

PREMIUM RUG FABRICATION & BINDING IN NYC

Rug Refinery provides specialized rug cutting, custom resizing, and premium edge binding for interior designers, trade professionals, and private clients. We seamlessly handle high-rise logistics and complex architectural installations across the five boroughs, including Tribeca, the Upper East Side, SoHo, and the West Village.

Standard rug sizes rarely fit modern, custom-built spaces perfectly. Whether you are repurposing an heirloom piece that is too large for your new apartment, turning a damaged rug into a pristine smaller piece, or fabricating a custom broadloom rug, our workroom delivers exact modifications.

Our artisans combine modern precision technology with traditional hand-finishing techniques. By securing the warp and weft before applying color-matched serging or wide cotton binding, we work to ensure your newly cut rug sits securely and precisely within its designated space without risking structural damage.
