Restoring antique textiles is a meticulous, time-intensive art form. Our master weavers custom-dye wool and rebuild structural foundations so new work blends as closely as practical with the surrounding weave and color, though the exact blending of new knots into an oxidized, century-old patina requires extensive expertise and assessment.

The Art of Historical Preservation

The Structural Rebuild: True restoration goes far beyond basic repair. When an antique rug suffers severe pile loss, holes, or foundation rot, the underlying warp and weft must be entirely reconstructed from scratch before a single knot of wool can be tied.

โ€Dye Matching & Patina: Recreating a missing geometric or floral motif requires sourcing vintage or custom-dyed yarns that closely mimic the faded, oxidized patina of a century-old textile. We match knot density and tension as closely as possible so the repair blends with the surrounding weave and color.

โ€Protecting Generational Value: A proper restoration blends the new weave as closely as practical into the original topography of the rug. This painstaking process not only saves the piece from ruin but actively preserves its historical integrity, aesthetic beauty, and financial appraisal value.

Specialized Restoration Techniques

Foundation Reconstruction

Completely rebuilding destroyed warp and weft grids caused by dry rot, large holes, or heavy furniture punctures, creating a structurally sound base for new pile.

Intricate Hand-Reweaving

Meticulously hand-tying thousands of individual knots using custom-sourced wool and silk to recreate missing geometric and floral motifs as closely as possible to the original design.

Severe Moth Damage Repair

Eradicating active larvae and restoring the wide, structural channels and bald spots left behind by advanced, widespread infestations. A handful of small, isolated moth holes can typically be repaired directly; see our Rug Repair service for that scope.

Color & Dye Correction

Utilizing specialized color-correction techniques to address severe sun fading, chemical dye bleeding, or alkaline burns, restoring the rug's original vibrancy.

MASTER-LEVEL ANTIQUE RUG RESTORATION IN NYC

Antique rugs are worth restoring. Rug Refinery rebuilds Persian, Oriental, Turkish and handmade heirlooms for collectors, designers and families across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island.

What restoration involves

Restoration goes beyond patching. When pile is missing or the foundation has failed, our weavers rebuild the warp and weft from scratch, then hand-knot custom-dyed wool or silk back into the pattern.

Matching century-old dyes is the hardest part. We keep an inventory of vintage yarns and custom-dye to the rug's faded patina so new knots blend into the original field.

Restoration work we perform

  • Rug reweaving โ€” hand-knotting new wool or silk to recreate missing pile and motifs
  • Foundation reconstruction โ€” rebuilding warp and weft destroyed by dry rot or large holes
  • Moth damage restoration โ€” treating infestations and rebuilding structural channels
  • Color and dye correction โ€” addressing sun fading, dye bleeding and alkaline burns
  • Pet urine damage restoration โ€” repairing chemically weakened foundations
  • Water and flood damage restoration โ€” stabilizing rugs after leaks and moisture exposure
  • Antique kilim and flatweave restoration โ€” for Turkish, Persian and tribal pieces

Timeline and estimates

Restoration is slow work. Rebuilding a foundation and tying thousands of knots can take 2 to 8 weeks depending on knot density, the size of the damage and the complexity of the pattern.

Questions?

Can a rug with a large hole or dry rot really be restored?

Yes. Large holes, severe dog chewing, and dry rot require structural reconstruction. Our master artisans first rebuild the underlying warp and weft foundation from scratch. Once the grid is secure, we hand-knot custom-dyed wool or silk back into the area to recreate the missing pattern as closely as possible.

Will the new wool match the faded colors of my antique rug?

Matching century-old, oxidized dyes is the most challenging aspect of restoration. We maintain an extensive inventory of vintage yarns and utilize custom-dyeing techniques to match the faded patina of your rug as closely as possible, so the new knots blend as closely as practical into the original pile.
