*Final dimensions and pattern symmetry are dependent on the rug's original weave density, structural foundation, and pattern repeat. Every custom project is meticulously templated and assessed before architectural cuts or binding begins.

Edge Binding Options

Hand Binding This is a traditional method that maintains exceptional value of the rug. It is best suited for fine, heirloom, and luxury carpets. Hand binding is the most premium option and the closest to orginal. The finishing technique in which the binding is carefully folded over the raw edge of the rug and hand-stitched with strong, high quality thread.

Machine Serging This a budget-friendly option that also provides durability. This finishing method is where a heavy yarn is wrapped continuously around the rug edge by a specialized machine. This creates a classic, whip-stitched look that mimics a traditional hand-finished blanket edge.

Machine Binding The fastest and most affordable rug edging option, which uses a high-speed machine to sew a thin polyester or cotton tape over the raw carpet edges. It provides a clean, functional, low-profile border that effectively prevents fraying on custom area rugs.

Fringe Fringe matching is a careful finishing process that restores or replaces the fringe of an area rug while maintaining its original character. Fibers are matched to the rugโ€™s existing materials, color, texture, and construction. The fringe is then hand-applied and securely woven into the foundation of the rug, with each strand carefully aligned to create a balanced, natural appearance.

Why it matters The visual identity of a rug lives in its border and central motif. Before any cut is made, we map the pattern repeat and plan the new dimensions around preserving as much of the original border and symmetry as possible, rather than cutting without regard to the original design. You'll have the option to choose between any of these.

Edge finishing is available once the new size is set; see Custom Rug Fabrication for those options.

PROFESSIONAL AREA RUG RESIZING IN NYC

Standard rug sizes rarely fit real rooms. Rug Refinery resizes and refinishes Persian, Oriental, antique, handmade and modern rugs for homes and design projects across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island.

Cutting a rug without ruining it

Hand-knotted rugs are held together by a continuous warp and weft. Cutting one immediately compromises that structure, so the raw edge has to be secured by hand before any finishing is applied.

We template every cut first, planning it around the border and pattern repeat to keep the design as symmetrical as possible at the new dimensions.

Custom Rug Resizing & Cutting Options

  • Size reduction โ€” making an oversized or inherited rug fit a smaller room
  • Custom hallway runners โ€” cut an existing area rug into a runner.
  • Hallway and gallery runners โ€” made from broadloom or an existing rug
  • Architectural contouring โ€” cutting around fireplace hearths, columns and floor outlets
  • Damage salvage โ€” turning a damaged rug into a smaller, pristine piece
  • Custom shapes โ€” round, oval and irregular dimensions
  • Matching rug pads โ€” cut to the new dimensions and contours (note: 1 inch shorter on all sides)

Questions?

Can any type of area rug be resized or custom-cut?

The vast majority of fine area rugs can be resized, including hand-knotted wool, silk, Persian, and tufted rugs. However, because hand-knotted rugs are held together by a continuous warp and weft foundation, cutting them immediately compromises their structural integrity. Before any alteration, our master artisans must secure the newly cut edge by hand to prevent the entire rug from unraveling, followed by your choice of premium edge finishing.

How do I provide the dimensions for a complex cut around a fireplace or floor outlet?

For complex architectural contouring, precision is everything. If you are an interior designer or architect, you can provide us with your exact floor plan CAD files or structural blueprints. For private clients, we typically require a physical, heavy-paper template tracing the exact angles of the hearth, column, or floor outlet so we can achieve as precise a fit as possible.

Will resizing my rug ruin its pattern or symmetry?

We plan every resize around preserving the original pattern and border as much as possible. While some reduction in size means part of the border or motif may be lost, our artisans plan cuts to keep the central medallion and overall symmetry intact for the new dimensions.

How long does a custom resizing or CAD cut project take?

Because custom alterations require meticulous templating, foundation stabilization, and hand-finishing, most resizing and binding projects require 2 to 3 weeks to complete. Highly complex CAD cuts or custom-sourced wide leather bindings may require additional time. We will always provide a clear timeline along with your estimate before the project begins.
