Area Rug Repair

PROFESSIONAL RUG REPAIR IN NYC

Damaged rugs can often be restored instead of replaced. Rug Refinery provides professional rug repair throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island for Persian, Oriental, antique and handmade area rugs. Additional service is available in Long Island, Westchester and Northern New Jersey. We repair tears, holes, worn edges, unraveling seams, moth damage and everyday wear using traditional restoration techniques that preserve the original beauty, structure and value of your rug.

STRUCTURAL RUG REPAIR: BEFORE & AFTER

AfterBefore
* Because vintage and antique dyes fade organically over time, exact color-matching for new yarns is an intricate process. Our primary goal with essential repair is to halt structural unraveling and restore the foundation's integrity as fully as possible, while making the physical repair as visually seamless as possible.

Why Immediate Repair Matters

Tears & Open Seams: A tear, slit, or open seam is a localized failure in the rug's foundation. Left alone, foot traffic and vacuum contact widen the damage and cause surrounding knots to release. Prompt stabilization stops a small tear from becoming a large hole.

Pet & Everyday Damage: Chewed corners, claw snags, and scattered small holes are among the most common repairs we perform. We patch and reinforce the affected area, matching yarn color and pile height so the repair blends into the surrounding field.

Knowing When Repair Is Enough: Most localized damage, such as a few inches of open seam, a corner chew, or a handful of small moth holes, can be repaired directly without disturbing the rest of the rug. Widespread damage across large sections of the foundation calls for full reconstruction instead; see our Antique Rug Restoration page for that scope of work.

Essential Rug Repair Services

Pet Damage & Chew Repair

Chewed corners, claw snags, and scattered pet damage are safely patched and reinforced, matching yarn color and pile height so the repair blends as closely as practical with the surrounding field.

Localized Moth Damage

A handful of small moth holes can usually be patched directly without a full rebuild. Widespread infestation damage is handled on our Antique Rug Restoration page instead.

Tear & Slit Stabilization

We expertly patch and stabilize rips, slits, and punctures caused by heavy furniture, pet damage, or vacuum cleaner accidents, preventing the tear from traveling further into the center of the rug.

Backing Replacement & Blocking

For tufted and modern rugs suffering from deteriorating latex or structural curling, we apply fresh, premium backings and utilize professional blocking techniques designed to help the rug lie as flat as possible.

Questions?

My dog chewed a corner of my rug. Can that be repaired?

Yes, in most cases. We patch and reinforce chewed corners and edges, matching the yarn color and pile height so the repair is nearly invisible. If the chewing has reached deep into the foundation, we'll let you know before starting work.

I found a few small moth holes. Do I need full restoration, or can this be repaired?

A handful of small, localized moth holes can usually be patched directly as a repair. Moth damage is often first spotted during a routine cleaning. If the infestation has spread across large sections of the foundation, that requires full reconstruction; see our Antique Rug Restoration service for that level of work.

Is it worth repairing an older or heavily worn area rug?

In most cases, yes. Repairing an unravelling edge, patching a small tear, or securing a worn fringe is a standard maintenance procedure. It is far more cost-effective to perform minor structural repairs now than to wait until the rug requires complete foundational restoration.

How long does a professional rug repair take?

Standard structural repairs, such as edge serging, binding, or basic fringe securing, generally take 1 to 2 weeks to complete in our workroom. We will always provide a clear timeline along with your estimate before the project begins.

PREMIUM RUG REPAIR & EDGING IN NYC

Rug Refinery provides specialized area rug repair, fringe replacement, and custom edge binding for private clients and interior design professionals. We seamlessly manage high-rise logistics and secure pickup and delivery for residences across the five boroughs, including the Upper East Side, Tribeca, SoHo, the West Village, and Brooklyn Heights.

Standard wear and tear is inevitable, but ignoring minor damage will quickly compromise the entire foundation of a woven textile. Whether your vacuum cleaner caught the side cord, your pet chewed a corner, or the fringe has simply worn away over decades of foot traffic, our artisans provide the exact physical interventions required to stop the damage in its tracks.

From color-matched hand-serging to precise overcasting, we engineer every repair to be as unnoticeable as possible while restoring as much structural integrity to your rug as the damage allows.

If the damage is limited to fringe or edges, visit our Rug Fringe Repair page. For a full edge refinish or custom binding, see Rug Cutting & Binding.
