* Because vintage and antique dyes fade organically over time, exact color-matching for new yarns is an intricate process. Our primary goal with essential repair is to halt structural unraveling and restore the foundation's integrity as fully as possible, while making the physical repair as visually seamless as possible.

Why Immediate Repair Matters

Tears and open seams. A tear, slit or open seam is a localized failure in the rug's foundation. Left alone, foot traffic and vacuum contact widen the damage and cause surrounding knots to release. Prompt stabilization stops a small tear from becoming a large hole.

Pet and everyday damage. Chewed corners, claw snags and scattered small holes are among the most common repairs we perform. We patch and reinforce the affected area, matching yarn color and pile height so the repair blends into the surrounding field.

Knowing when repair is enough. Most localized damage can be repaired directly without disturbing the rest of the rug. Widespread damage across large sections of the foundation calls for full reconstruction instead; see our Antique Rug Restoration page for that scope of work.

Repairs we handle most often:

  • Moth damage rug repair: patching holes and bald channels left by larvae
  • Pet damage repair: chewed corners, claw snags and urine-weakened areas
  • Hole and tear repair: punctures from furniture, heels and vacuum accidents
  • Open seam and split repair: restitching failed joins before they spread
  • Worn edge and side cord repair: rebuilding the perimeter that holds knots in place
  • Rug reweaving: hand-knotting new wool or silk into missing pile
  • Backing replacement and blocking: for tufted rugs with failing latex or curling corners

PROFESSIONAL AREA RUG REPAIR IN NYC

Most rug damage is repairable. Rug Refinery handles holes, tears, open seams, moth damage, pet damage and worn edges on Persian, Oriental, antique and handmade rugs across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island.

Why small damage spreads

A rug is held together by tension. Once an edge unravels or a seam opens, foot traffic and vacuum contact release the surrounding knots, and a minor repair becomes a major reconstruction.

Our weavers stabilize the foundation first, then rebuild with color-matched yarn so the repair blends into the surrounding field.

Rugs We Repair & Reweave

  • Persian and Oriental hand-knotted rugs
  • Turkish Oushak, Anatolian and kilim flatweaves
  • Moroccan Beni Ourain and high-pile wool
  • Antique and heirloom textiles
  • Wool, silk and cotton area rugs
  • Tufted, hooked and modern machine-made rugs

How repairs are quoted

Repair pricing depends on the damage, the rug's construction and the materials needed, so every project is quoted individually. Send photos and we'll give you a clear estimate at no charge.

If the damage is limited to fringe or edges, see Rug Fringe Repair. For a full edge refinish, see Custom Rug Fabrication.

Questions?

My dog chewed a corner of my rug. Can that be repaired?

Yes, in most cases. We patch and reinforce chewed corners and edges, matching the yarn color and pile height so the repair is nearly invisible. If the chewing has reached deep into the foundation, we'll let you know before starting work.

I found a few small moth holes. Do I need full restoration, or can this be repaired?

A handful of small, localized moth holes can usually be patched directly as a repair. Moth damage is often first spotted during a routine cleaning. If the infestation has spread across large sections of the foundation, that requires full reconstruction; see our Antique Rug Restoration service for that level of work.

Is it worth repairing an older or heavily worn area rug?

In most cases, yes. Repairing an unravelling edge, patching a small tear, or securing a worn fringe is a standard maintenance procedure. It is far more cost-effective to perform minor structural repairs now than to wait until the rug requires complete foundational restoration.

How long does a professional rug repair take?

Standard structural repairs, such as edge serging, binding, or basic fringe securing, generally take 1 to 2 weeks to complete in our workroom. We will always provide a clear timeline along with your estimate before the project begins.
