Restoring Beauty, Fringe by Fringe

Because vintage and antique dyes fade organically over time, our master artisans meticulously source and color-match all finishing yarns. Our goal is to restore as much structural integrity to the perimeter as the damage allows, while keeping the repair as visually seamless as possible.

The Perimeter Defense of Your Rug

The Anatomy of a Fringe: On a true hand-knotted rug, the fringe is not merely a decorative trim sewn onto the ends. It is the exposed warp, the foundational skeleton that runs through the entire length of the rug. When this fringe wears down to the pile, the knots have nothing holding them in place and will begin to slip off the foundation.

โ€Stopping the Unraveling: Worn side cords (the long edges of the rug) suffer from the same vulnerability. Vacuum cleaners, heavy foot traffic, and pet damage easily fray these edges. Immediate overcasting, serging, or binding creates a physical barrier that locks the foundation back into place before severe damage occurs.

โ€Bespoke Aesthetics: Securing the perimeter of a rug does not mean compromising its beauty. We meticulously source custom-dyed wools, cottons, and silks to match your rug's original aesthetic as closely as possible, or we can modernize the piece with architectural finishes like wide leather borders.

Perimeter Restoration Options

Hand-Knotted Fringe Repair

For fine Persian and Oriental rugs, we meticulously rebuild the exposed warp threads, reweaving new cotton, wool, or silk yarns directly into the foundation to recreate the original fringe.

Premade Fringe Application

For machine-made or tufted rugs with irreparably damaged ends, we remove the compromised fibers and expertly sew on high-quality, pre-fabricated replacement fringes to restore a clean look.

End Stabilization & Overcasting

Before wear spreads further, we secure the exposed warp ends with tight overcasting stitches, halting unraveling at the source and protecting the foundation until full fringe work can be completed.

Fringe Wear Prevention

We recommend simple habits, like vacuuming away from the fringe and rotating high-traffic rugs, paired with periodic inspection to catch wear before it reaches the pile. Need a full edge refinish instead? See our Rug Cutting & Binding service.

PROFESSIONAL FRINGE REPAIR & PREVENTION IN NYC

Fringe isn't decorative โ€” it's the exposed warp that holds the rug together. Rug Refinery repairs and replaces fringe on Persian, Oriental, antique and handmade rugs across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island.

Why worn fringe is urgent

Wear almost always starts at the perimeter. Once fringe unravels down to the pile, the knots at the end of the rug have nothing anchoring them and begin releasing row by row.

Caught early, it's a straightforward repair. Left alone, it becomes foundation reconstruction.

Fringe and edge work we perform

  • Hand-knotted fringe repair โ€” rebuilding exposed warp threads on fine Persian and Oriental rugs
  • Fringe replacement โ€” sewing on new fringe where the original is beyond saving
  • End stabilization and overcasting โ€” halting unraveling at the source
  • Side cord repair โ€” rebuilding worn long edges damaged by vacuums and traffic
  • Fringe removal and clean edge finishing โ€” for a more modern look
  • Pet damage edge repair โ€” chewed corners and frayed perimeters

Questions?

Can my damaged fringe be fixed without making the rug shorter?

In most cases on hand-knotted rugs, yes. If the fringe is worn away but the main pile is intact, our weavers can attach new warp threads directly into the foundation to rebuild the fringe without cutting into the design of the rug.

How do I know if my fringe needs to be reattached or fully rebuilt?

If the fringe is worn but the warp threads are still intact, we can often reattach or reinforce what's there. If the threads have fully deteriorated down to the pile, the fringe needs to be rebuilt by hand-knotting new warp extensions into the foundation.

My dog chewed the corner of my rug. Can the edge be bound to fix it?

If the damage is strictly on the edge or corner, we can often straighten the perimeter slightly to remove the chewed section and apply a fresh serging or binding. If the chew marks go deep into the pile, we would need to perform a foundation repair before finishing the edge.

How long does fringe replacement or edge binding take?

Standard structural edge repairs, such as side serging, cotton binding, or premade fringe application, generally take 1 to 2 weeks. Complex reweaving of hand-knotted fringes may require 3 to 4 weeks due to the meticulous nature of the process.
