A hand-knotted Persian rug, silk rug, antique Oushak and modern viscose rug should not automatically receive the same process. Fiber chemistry, weave structure, dye stability and existing wear all affect what can safely be cleaned, repaired or altered. That assessment is also important before resizing or restoration, where an inappropriate cut or repair can compromise the rug's foundation.
