Rug Refinery fabricates custom-shaped rugs for interior designers, architects and homeowners across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island. We shape and fabricate area rugs, runners and rug pads. We do not work on wall-to-wall carpet, stair runners or carpet remnants.
Shapes a room actually needs
Rooms are rarely rectangles. We cut rugs to rounds, ovals, octagons, radiused corners and angled plans, and contour them around hearths, columns and floor outlets so the rug reads as part of the room rather than something laid over it.
Working from drawings
For designers and architects we work directly from CAD files or floor plans. For private clients a physical, heavy-paper template tracing the exact angles gives the most reliable fit. Either way the shape is templated and checked before a single cut is made, and the pattern repeat is mapped so the medallion and border stay as balanced as the new outline allows.
Structural stability
Cutting through a rug's foundation exposes the warp and weft. Every fabrication is assessed first to determine the safest way to cut the piece and how the new edge will be secured before it leaves the workroom.
Edge finishing
Once the shape is cut, the new edge has to be finished or it will unravel. That side of the work is covered on our rug binding and edge finishing page.
