Edge Finishing Options
What Binding Is Binding is the finished border that holds a rug's edge together. Without it a cut or worn edge keeps letting go, one row at a time, until the damage reaches the pile.
Foundation First A rug is held together by a continuous warp and weft. Before any edge binding goes on we secure that foundation by hand, so the new border has something sound to hold.
Four Finishes Hand binding, machine serging, machine binding and fringe. We recommend one based on the rug's pile, weave, age and how much traffic the edge takes.

Hand Binding
This is a traditional method that maintains exceptional value of the rug. It is best suited for fine, heirloom, and luxury carpets. Hand binding is the most premium option and the closest to original. The finishing technique in which the binding is carefully folded over the raw edge of the rug and hand-stitched with strong, high quality thread.

Machine Serging
This a budget-friendly option that also provides durability. This finishing method is where a heavy yarn is wrapped continuously around the rug edge by a specialized machine. This creates a classic, whip-stitched look that mimics a traditional hand-finished blanket edge.

Machine Binding
The fastest and most affordable rug edging option, which uses a high-speed machine to sew a thin polyester or cotton tape over the raw carpet edges. It provides a clean, functional, low-profile border that effectively prevents fraying on custom area rugs.

Fringe
Fringe matching is a careful finishing process that restores or replaces the fringe of an area rug while maintaining its original character. Fibers are matched to the rug's existing materials, color, texture, and construction. The fringe is then hand-applied and securely woven into the foundation of the rug, with each strand carefully aligned to create a balanced, natural appearance.

Why it matters
An edge is the first thing to go. Once the binding or serging wears through, the foundation starts letting go row by row, and what began as a loose thread becomes lost pile. Rebinding early costs a fraction of reweaving later.

Where to get a rug bound in NYC
Searches for carpet binding and area rug binding almost always mean the same thing: closing the raw or worn edge of an area rug so the weave cannot come apart. That is the work this page is about. Depending on the rug we bind, serge, whip or hem that edge, and the right answer changes with the piece — a machine-made wool rug in a hallway and a hand-knotted Persian want different things.
Binding vs. serging
Serging, also called whipping, wraps a heavy yarn continuously around the edge to form a whip-stitched, blanket-like border — the classic look on Persian and fine wool rugs. Binding folds a tape or fabric strip over the raw edge and sews it down for a cleaner, lower-profile border. Hand binding is the most refined version: folded over the raw edge and hemmed by hand, it sits closest to an original edge and is the right choice for fine, heirloom and luxury rugs.
When a rug needs binding
- A fraying or unravelling edge — the old binding or serging has worn through
- A rug that was just cut — the raw edge has to be bound before it comes apart
- A worn or loose side cord — the selvedge along the long sides has gone slack or split
- A change of finish — machine serging swapped for hand binding, or the reverse
- Runners — bound along both long edges to survive hallway traffic
- Rug pads — cut and finished to match the bound rug's dimensions
Rug cutting and binding
A rug that has just been cut is an open wound — the foundation is exposed and it will unravel unless the new edge is secured and finished. We do both here: the cut is templated and made, the foundation is stabilised by hand, and the new edge is bound, serged or fringed before the rug leaves.
